TV show to name Conroe as one of ‘world’s greatest’ | 3/17/08

By Lucretia Fernandez, Courier

The city of Conroe is expected to be featured on a television series called “World’s Greatest! …” this spring, as one of the greatest little-known places in the region.

Officials with Florida Production Company, Crown Point Productions, notified Mayor Tommy Metcalf of their choice recently, and Metcalf announced it during City Council’s Thursday meeting.

“Conroe was one of 300 cities which they researched and we were named the greatest,” Metcalf said.

He commended fellow council members and city staff for helping build the city into what it is today.

Conroe will be featured as one of several cities across the United States in the third season of “World’s Greatest! …” which airs on the Ion, formerly PAX cable channel.

“We look at the best things in the world --- companies, places to live and so forth,” Crown Point Production Senior Producer Kris Zeisler said.  “For the upcoming season, five to six episodes will be on the greatest places to live in the United States.

“We’re not looking at well-known cities, like New York, because everyone knows about New York and we don’t think it’d interest our viewers.  These cities are great little places you may not have heard of.”

Cities are chosen for their history, visual elements and what they offer residents, Zeisler said.

Crown Point Productions could be filming in Conroe as early as April, with an air date in May or June.  However, Metcalf mentioned during the council meeting, he hopes the producers can wait until the Owen Theatre renovation is complete.  The groundbreaking for the building was Thursday.

Robert Baccarie, a researcher with Crown Point Productions, said Conroe first caught his attention because, with its rapid growth, the city has experienced a dramatic decrease in crime.

According to the city’s “State of the City Report,” 46 new subdivisions were started in the past four years and, during the past two years, robberies decreased by 54 percent, assaults decreased by 34 percent, larcenies decreased by 19 percent and burglaries decreased by 14 percent.  City officials also recently officially announced Conroe is now a city of more than 50,000 residents.  As it has grown, city officials say they are maintaining Conroe’s history with revitalization projects.

Other aspects that caught Baccarie’s attention include the city’s lowering taxes as the population grows, attracting well-known corporations such as ReedHycalog, being a Main Street city and the volunteer and non-profit activity.

Baccarie was also impressed that Conroe has a symphony.

While many of Conroe’s attractiveness is in the intangibles, Baccarie and Zeisler said they hope they can show viewers why they think Conroe is one of the greatest places to live.
